What is a fuel filter?

In theory, the working of a combustion engine is relatively simple. At a distance, the running of an engine is as simple as having fuel and air in the piston cylinder. But only if someone knows the practical function of an engine and how each external factor can affect its performance, only then can someone appreciate the intricate details that go into perfecting an engine. Out of the many factors that limit the efficiency of an engine, one factor is impurities such as water and dirt in the fuel going into the engine.

There are several reasons for the contamination of fuel. Foreign particles can make their way into a car’s fuel system through the fuel tank or while the fuel is being transported to the pump. Here is where the fuel filter comes into play. A fuel filter is one of the essentials to maintain optimum engine health. It cleans off contaminants in the fuel that comes to a car’s engine. Fuel filters have a filter that can catch small particles of debris. The fuel filter has a bowl-like design in diesel engines, trapping water at the bottom as it is denser than diesel.

What are the symptoms of a bad fuel filter?

A bad fuel filter is similarly threatening for engines with carburetors or fuel injection systems. A fuel pump can fail if connected to a clogged fuel filter as it would have to pump harder to compensate for the clogged filter. A bad fuel filter may allow contaminants to enter a car’s fuel system. A fuel injector can be easily clogged or start leaking because of the impurities in the fuel. Also, water in the fuel may cause corrosion in the fuel system, leading to extensive engine damage. These are significant signs of a faulty fuel filter.

How do I know if my fuel filter needs changing?

Like all other vehicle parts, a clogged fuel filter has its signs. Other than the major problems a faulty fuel filter can cause, other signs indicate the need for fuel filter replacement. A bad fuel filter can choke fuel to a car’s engine and can show the following symptoms;

  • Significant decrease in power in situations with a higher load
  • Misfiring of the engine on idle
  • Stalling when accelerated or at random moments
  • Extended durations of cranking before the engine starts
  • Significantly decreased fuel economy
  • Strong odors in the exhaust gas

These symptoms can be critical signs that your car’s fuel filter needs to be changed.

How long does a fuel filter last?

After one knows what a fuel filter and its functionality is, it’s easy to note the signs of a clogged one. But it’s always better to be pre-emptive in the maintenance of your vehicle, so you are not stuck on the way; the signs are not always noticeable. Ideally, a fuel filter should last for 100,000 kilometers before going bad. But a fuel filter should be changed from 30-60,000 kilometers for optimal engine health. Anything above 150,000 kilometers for a fuel filter can be very detrimental to the health of an engine.
